Travel Tips: How to decant your perfumes for a flight

1. Know the "3-1-1" Rule (2026 Edition)

Before you even pick up a funnel, remember the golden rule of carry-on liquids. To pass through security without a hitch:

  • 3.4 Ounces: Each container must be 3.4 ounces (100ml) or less.

  • 1 Bag: All containers must fit into one clear, quart-sized, resealable plastic bag.

  • 1 Person: Each passenger is limited to one bag.

Pro Tip: Even if your 100ml bottle is nearly empty, if the bottle itself is larger than 100ml, security may still confiscate it. Decanting into smaller vials is the safest way to go.

2. Essential Tools for Decanting

To do this professionally and avoid wasting expensive liquid, you’ll need:

  • Travel Atomizers: Look for "bottom-fill" models that pump directly from your perfume bottle.

  • Mini Funnels or Pipettes: Best for bottles with non-removable spray heads.

  • Plumbing Tape (PTFE): A secret weapon! Wrapping a small bit around the threads of your decant bottle prevents leaks caused by cabin pressure changes.

3. Step-by-Step: How to Decant

There are two main ways to transfer your fragrance:

Method A: The Pump-to-Fill (Easiest)

Many modern travel atomizers feature a valve at the bottom.

  1. Remove the spray cap from your main perfume bottle.

  2. Align the bottom of the travel atomizer with the exposed plastic tube.

  3. Pump up and down until the travel vial is full.

Method B: The Funnel & Spray

If your perfume bottle doesn't have a removable cap, you'll need to spray it manually.

  1. Place a tiny funnel into the mouth of your travel vial.

  2. Hold the nozzle of your perfume bottle extremely close to the funnel.

  3. Spray slowly into the funnel to minimize "mist loss" and oxidation.
